OBESITY

Obesity is a complex disease involving an excessive amount of body fat.

It was traditionally defined as an increase in body weight that was greater than 20% of an individual’s ideal weight.

The metric BMI formula = Weight (KG) ÷ Height (Metres²)

Types

The obesity is categorised into below types by researchers

  • Heavy drinking males
  • Younger, healthy females
  • Physically sick but happy elderly
  • Affluent healthy, elderly
  • Unhappy, anxious middle aged
  • Poorest health
Causes of Obesity:
  • Physical inactivity
  • Over eating
  • Genetics
  • Frequency of eating
  • Psychological factors
  • Diseases such as Hypothyroidism, PCOD, Insulin resistance, Cushing’s syndrome
  • Some type of medications
Symptoms:

Pain in areas like back of the body, joints etc,. Over weight, Farigue, Snoring, Breathlessness, Pot Belly, Increased sweating, depression, binge eating.

Prevention
  • Consume more good fat (HDL) – Coconut milk, Flax Seed, Almond, Chia seeds
  • Eat more diuretic diet like gourds, fruits, cabbage, radish, Knoolkol, Carrot, Beetroot etc
  • Take less processed / sugary food items
  • Eat more fruits and vegetables
  • Take plenty of dietary fiber
  • Focus on eating low glycaemic index food items like Minor Millets (Ragi, Cumbu, Solam, Thinai, Varagu, Kudhiraivali), Red rice, Fish, Fruits (Papaya, Berries, Apple, Pear, Mango, Lime)
  • Regular physical activities / exercise / yoga / meditation
  • Reduce stress level through proper life style
